The best stories make you lose sleep at night, because you just can’t stop reading them. They teach you something, and when you put them down, you are a little bit closer to who you’re meant to be. They are inspiring, exciting, contagious and original. These are the kinds of stories I grew up reading, and they’re the kind I write.
I became a writer because when I was a child, angry and alone, I turned to stories and they saved my life. John Irving taught me about humanity while Anne McCaffrey showed me bravery and Roald Dahl kept me from sliding into cynicism. I learned my values from these stories; their heroes were my mentors.
I write mostly within the genre of fantasy because it is within the pages of fantasy and science-fiction that I’ve seen life’s deepest struggles most honestly reflected. Fantasy explores soul purpose, survival, courage and power. I can’t get enough of it.
I think my all-time favorite thing about fantasy is that, in entering this new world, you are welcomed into a community of its characters: powerful, kind, determined people who love each other like family and will die to do the right thing. That’s the kind of people I want to spend time with, you know? All that magic in Harry Potter and the thing I was most envious of growing up was how close Harry was to those two great best friends.
